New Moon Ōi Night

As the sun begins to dip below the horizon, we will gather above Ngāranui and with luck on our side, we’ll observe the ōi as they return to land for their breeding season. With their distinctive calls, the Ōi/Grey-Faced Petrels are unmistakable.

They choose to come into land during dark and stormy new moons, so fingers crossed for a bit of wind!

Come prepared for an outdoor adventure. We recommend warm clothing, a blanket to wrap up in, and a warm cup of tea! Bring along your patience too - sometimes it takes a while to see or hear them - and sometimes we have no luck at all!

If you’ve been volunteering on traplines for years and have yet to witness the ōi for yourself, now’s your chance!
