Recently, species indicator dog Miro, and his handler Jo, visited Karioi. Miro, a conservation dog, is specifically trained to sniff out hard-to-find seabird burrows. Miro didn't disappoint, discovering some new kororā (little blue penguin) chicks in burrows at the south end of Ngarunui Beach. Kororā are nationally in decline and it's a privilege to find them right here on our shoreline.
Unfortunately one of kororā’s biggest threats are dogs. It's a timely reminder that the southern end of Ngarunui Beach is a dogs-on-lead exercise area only. Please help us raise awareness to other dog users on the beach.
